1988 Mitsubishi
Starion ESI-R
This car is owned by Mike Hibbler, of St. Charles Mo. This car is
also known as a Dodge Conquest, but with some minor trim changes.
The car's powerplant is a 2.6 liter turbocharged inline 4. The “R”
model includes wider tires and adjustable shocks. This was the top
of the line Mitsubishi sports car from the 80’s and was designed to
compete with the Supra, 300ZX, RX-7, and 944. The car has
independent suspension and disk brakes on all corners plus a factory
LSD for good track performance.
Modifications:
NGK plug wires
MSD Blaster II coil
Manual booster controller @ 15psi
Race style blow off valve
Polished intercooler
Air/Fuel and boost meters
Custom shift boot
Single 2.5” exhaust that exits in front of the right rear wheel
Modified sway bar bushings and links on the front
Modified air box
Fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail
More cleaned and painted parts than I care to remember.
Work in progress:
Custom fiberglass front grill
High flow intake manifold
4-piston front brake calipers
Custom adjustable fuel regulator
Fiberglass gauge pods
Future Goals:
I’d like to turn this car into a quick street car with good
cornering performance. I think 320 hp will give the car a good
balance between acceleration and controllability. Anything more
power and the car will take too many drivetrain modifications. A
bigger turbo and fuel injection system should produce the numbers
I’m looking for. Water injection will be used for high boost. The
engine isn’t perfect, so I might look into a Mazda or Mitsubishi
engine swap later on.
